Syntax Issue 10
Denver Syntax
{bura-bura}
  kat sanchez

This began at the bending of knees,
the curve of your body sitting.
I looked down at you and saw the study
of a language not yet yours or mine
written as if to say,
“I will follow.”

I walked the length of a muddied field
and when I looked next, you had not moved
in any direction.

So I learned to read in syllabary
and put my mouth around the distance
of a word.

When you finally stretched your legs
it was to invert our structure, replace
the subject. And when we spoke again
it was because we put our lips
to the ground and went apart
together, aimless.
