Syntax Issue 10
Denver Syntax
{sen und nichts sei dasselbe
being and non-being are the same
}
  taylor eagan

I watch myself drink a glass of water in the bathroom mirror.
I can hear Nick reading aloud in our bed.
"What are you reading?" I ask,
looking at my lips move like worms after rain.
He finished the paragraph he's on. "Hegel," he says.
I turn the sink on and wait for the water to get hot
before turning it off again.
Water sounds different when it's hot.
"There's a dog at the park named Hegel," I say.
"A German shepherd."
"Sounds about right," he says.
I finish the glass of water and leave it on the tank
of the toilet. I get into bed with all my clothes on
instead of brushing my teeth, and I wait for Nick
to fall asleep so I can turn the light off.
