Two women brought a black dog
Into the back room of the café
Where I am looking out a window
Onto the corner of University and Raymond -
I should have stopped to say hello,
To scratch behind its ears, or under its neck.
Days later, I will come back
And find the room empty,
I will close the door behind me
So that no women
Or black dogs
Will make me smile.
